AutoBacklinks vs Respona (2026)
by Rachid Idali
Last Updated: August 24, 2026
This comparison is not the software shootout it looks like, because one of the two products stopped being software.
Respona built its name as self-serve outreach software: you ran your own prospecting, found your own contacts, and emailed publishers directly. That product is no longer what respona.com sells. Today its pricing page is headlined "Pay-per-result pricing," and what you buy is finished placements at $100 to $500 per link. It is an agency wearing a software company's domain, and its fee rides on every link you will ever get from it.
AutoBacklinks is the opposite bet: software you run yourself, direct to publishers, with an AI agent doing the grunt work the old Respona made you do by hand. If what you liked about the old Respona was owning your own campaigns, this is the successor to that idea, at $79/mo.
And there is a twist almost nobody covers: the old Respona software did not die. It moved. It lives inside Semrush's App Center under a different name, at $169/mo, and I will break that path down too.

Three ways out of the old Respona: buy the links, run an agent, or rent the old software inside Semrush.
What Respona sells now: pay-per-link placements
Respona's pricing page today lists no software subscription at all. It sells placements, tiered by the publisher's Domain Rating:
| Tier | Price per placement | Publisher |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $100 | DR 20+, 100–5K monthly traffic |
| Standard | $160 | DR 30+, 100–10K |
| Authority | $240 | DR 40+, 500–20K |
| Power | $400 | DR 50+, 1K–30K |
| Elite | $500 | DR 60+, 1K–100K |
Each placement includes content, outreach, and publishing; you control anchors, URLs, and custom requirements. Standard turnaround is 28 days, with a 14-day express option for an extra fee. Volume discounts start at 10% once you spend $3,000 a month and scale to 60% at the very top of an $80,000-a-month slider. The promise on the page is "Guaranteed brand placements on auto-pilot."

Respona's live pricing page: pay-per-result placements, no software subscription in sight (respona.com, August 2026).
Be clear about what this model is. It is the agency and marketplace model: a fixed price per link, with Respona's content production, outreach labor, and margin all inside that price. How the money splits between Respona and the publisher is not disclosed. Whatever the split, the structure does not change: every link you ever acquire this way carries their fee, your unit cost never falls below the tier price unless you commit thousands a month, and the publisher relationships stay in their pipeline, not yours. Stop paying and you keep the links you bought, but you own nothing that produces the next one.
None of this is hidden; the pricing page is admirably direct, and Respona still carries a 4.8 on G2 from 199 reviews, most of them earned in its software years. The point is simpler: if you came to a "Respona vs" comparison expecting to weigh two outreach tools, respona.com no longer sells you one. I took apart the placement model and its rivals in the Respona alternatives breakdown; this article is about the other question.
AutoBacklinks vs Respona: who runs your outreach now?
If Respona's pivot left you without your outreach software, you have two real paths that keep you in the driver's seat. One is new. One is the old Respona itself, wearing a different badge.
Path 1: AutoBacklinks, the successor to running it yourself
Quick disclosure before the pitch: AutoBacklinks is our product, so weigh my conclusions accordingly. Everything I state about Respona and Semrush above and below comes from their own live pages.
The old Respona workflow was search-based prospecting, contact discovery, AI-personalized emails, and sequences, all operated by you. AutoBacklinks keeps the ownership and removes the operating. You brief an agent in chat, and it runs the pipeline: finds prospects, scores them for topical relevance, filters them by Domain Rating and organic traffic (included, 0.5 credits per site), pulls verified contacts only for sites that qualify, and writes each first-touch email and follow-up from the prospect's own page. It stops where you want judgment: hold every draft for review, or let qualified drafts send automatically, paced to your mailbox.

A real campaign in AutoBacklinks: the agent's log on the left, the pipeline it built on the right.
Prospecting goes further than the old Respona's search operators ever did. One campaign can pull from web search, competitor backlinks classified by link type, the pages ChatGPT cites in your niche, blogs that reviewed your competitors, niche directories, your own lists, or a CSV:

One campaign, several prospect sources, configured in a six-step wizard that takes about two minutes.
Sending runs from your own mailbox (Gmail, Google Workspace, or any SMTP provider) with warmup included free. Campaigns can recur weekly, biweekly, or monthly, so the pipeline refills itself. And when publishers reply, the AI Reply Analyzer extracts every price, placement type, and payment term, scores the deal, and files it on a kanban board that runs from Needs Review to Published, with a backlink valuation tool that tells you a fair value and a recommended maximum before you pay anyone:

Replies become structured deals: extracted terms, Domain Rating, and price on every card.
That last part matters in a world where Respona charges $160 for a DR 30+ placement. When you go direct, publishers quote you their real prices; the board above shows quotes from $10 to $150 on live campaigns, and our published campaign turned 187 emails into 32 replies, a 17.1% reply rate, by pitching relevant sites about their own pages. Direct outreach is not only ownership. It is the wholesale price.
AutoBacklinks Starter is $79/mo with 2,500 credits, roughly 1,500 outreach emails, two mailboxes, and everything above included; Growth ($179) and Scale ($399) extend the same model to 5 and 25 websites, which is how agencies run it. The trial is self-serve: 7 days, 120 credits, card required. I put it head-to-head with the other big platform in AutoBacklinks vs Pitchbox.
Path 2: the old Respona still exists, inside Semrush
Here is the part most Respona coverage misses entirely. The self-serve Respona software was not shut down. It was repackaged as AI Backlink Builder, an app in Semrush's App Center, and the listing's developer line reads: Developed by Respona.

The old Respona, rebadged: AI Backlink Builder in the Semrush App Center, developed by Respona (semrush.com, August 2026).
What you get is recognizably the old product. The listing describes template-driven campaigns, automated opportunity identification from your keywords and campaign goals, contact acquisition by job title and seniority with LinkedIn profiles, AI personalization based on each recipient's content, a built-in CRM, a collaborative unified inbox, and campaign analytics. The suggested use cases are the classic Respona set: link building, affiliate recruitment, podcast outreach, and PR outreach.
The terms: a free 7-day trial, then $169/mo, unsubscribe anytime. The plan includes 2 email accounts, 10,000 monthly data credits, and 30,000 active contacts, with in-app purchases beyond that. You need a Semrush account to start it, since the app lives inside their App Center.
An honest read of this path, both directions. If what you want is the exact old Respona workflow, this is genuinely it, still maintained, still buyable, and this section exists because you deserve to know that. But look at what you are renting: the manual, template-driven model at $169/mo, more than twice the price of an agent that runs the pipeline for you. The listing does not mention mailbox warmup. It does not mention SEO-metric thresholds you filter by. There is no agent; you build the campaigns, and the templates wait for you to fill them. It is the old way of working, preserved, at a premium price inside someone else's platform.
AutoBacklinks vs Respona pricing: what a month costs
Put the three paths side by side for a month of link building:
One month, three paths, priced from each company's own pages.
Five modest links a month from Respona (Standard tier, DR 30+) is $800, and it is $800 again every month you want five more; a year of that pace is $9,600, and the volume discounts do not even wake up until you spend $3,000 a month. The old-software path through Semrush is $2,028 a year, plus your hours running template campaigns. AutoBacklinks is $948 a year at monthly billing ($869 annual), and the agent does the operating.
The deeper difference is what each dollar buys. Placement dollars buy links; when they stop, everything stops. Software dollars buy a pipeline: prospect lists, publisher contacts, reply history, and relationships that keep producing after any single month's spend. The old Respona understood that; it is the product it used to sell.
AutoBacklinks or Respona: which should you choose?
Choose AutoBacklinks if:
- You want what the old Respona promised, ownership of your own outreach, with the manual work finally automated.
- You want to go direct to publishers and pay their real prices, not a fixed tier with a middleman's fee inside.
- You want prospecting the old Respona never had: competitor backlink scans, ChatGPT source scans, review and directory scans, run by an agent.
- You want it at $79/mo, monthly, with a self-serve trial.
When does Respona's placement model make sense?
- You have budget, zero hours, and truly never want to touch outreach; you are buying an outcome, not a capability. Weigh that honestly against what outsourcing actually costs before you commit to a per-link fee forever.
When does the Semrush app make sense?
- You specifically want the old Respona workflow, templates and all, and will pay $169/mo for the familiar interface inside a Semrush account you may already have.

FAQ
What happened to Respona?
Respona repositioned from self-serve outreach software to a done-for-you placement service. Its pricing page today is headlined "Pay-per-result pricing" and sells placements at $100 to $500 per link depending on the publisher's Domain Rating, with content, outreach, and publishing included. No software subscription is listed on respona.com.
Can I still use Respona to run my own outreach campaigns?
Not through respona.com. The self-serve software lives on as AI Backlink Builder, an app in the Semrush App Center whose listing says "Developed by Respona." It costs $169/mo after a free 7-day trial and requires a Semrush account.
Is the AI Backlink Builder in Semrush the same as the old Respona?
It is the same lineage and the same model: template-driven campaigns, keyword-based opportunity identification, contact discovery with job titles and LinkedIn profiles, AI personalization, a CRM, and a unified inbox, developed by Respona and sold through Semrush at $169/mo with 2 email accounts, 10,000 monthly data credits, and 30,000 active contacts.
How much does Respona cost per link?
$100 for DR 20+ publishers, $160 for DR 30+, $240 for DR 40+, $400 for DR 50+, and $500 for DR 60+. Standard turnaround is 28 days, express is 14 days for an extra fee, and volume discounts start at 10% once you spend $3,000 a month.
What is the best alternative to the old Respona?
AutoBacklinks is the closest successor to what the old Respona sold: software for running your own campaigns direct to publishers, with the prospecting, contact finding, and email writing now handled by an AI agent instead of templates. It costs $79/mo with SEO metrics, verified contacts, AI drafting, and mailbox warmup included, on a self-serve 7-day trial.
Is buying placements better than doing outreach?
Buying placements trades money for time: you get guaranteed links with zero effort, and you pay the service's fee on every link, forever, while the publisher relationships stay in their pipeline. Running your own outreach costs less per month than most single placements and builds contacts, reply history, and relationships you keep. If you truly have no hours at all, buy; otherwise own the capability.
