12 Best Link Building Automation Tools in 2026
by Rachid Idali
Last Updated: August 28, 2026
A link building automation tool is software that performs one or more stages of link acquisition for you: finding prospects, qualifying them, finding contacts, writing the pitch, and sending it. No tool automates all six stages of link building, because the sixth stage, earning the link, is a decision another person makes.
So instead of ranking these tools on vibes, I scored each one on how many of the six stages it actually performs. Three cover five stages. One of those three sends the emails without waiting for your approval, and one of the tools doing real automation is free for a single project, which no roundup I read mentioned.
AutoBacklinks is my top pick for a solo SEO or small team running the whole pipeline (full disclosure: it is our tool, and it shares the top score rather than winning outright). Pitchbox for agency teams. BuzzStream for relationship-led digital PR.
Here is the scoreboard, then the full review of each tool.
The 12 best link building automation tools at a glance
Each tool scores out of 5. It earns 1.0 when it performs a stage for you end to end, 0.5 when it assists but you still do the core work, and 0 when it does not touch the stage. Stage 6 is excluded because no tool automates it.
| Tool | Best for | Discover | Qualify | Contacts | Write | Send | Score | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. AutoBacklinks | The whole pipeline, solo to agency | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | 5.0 | $79/mo |
| 2. BacklinkGPT | Keyword to live link, with LinkedIn | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | 5.0 | $149/mo |
| 3. Mentiohunt | Founders who want it fully hands-off | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | 5.0 | $49/mo |

| 6. BuzzStream | Digital PR and relationships | ✓ | ½ | ✓ | ½ | ✓ | 4.0 | $49/mo |
| 7. Medialyst | Journalist outreach without blasting | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ½ | ½ | 4.0 | $149/mo |

| 12. Respona | Buying placements, not automating | Managed service | n/a | $100/link |
How I scored these link building automation tools
This is documentary research, not a hands-on test of twelve products. Every cell comes from the vendor's own live pricing page, product page, or help documentation, read in August 2026. Where a vendor's docs did not answer a question, I scored conservatively and said so rather than assuming the feature exists.
Hold that against the piece where it matters: a tool can document a feature well and execute it badly. This score tells you which stages a vendor commits to performing. It does not tell you how good the emails are.
Every campaign runs the same six stages, whether you do them by hand or buy software. I set these out in how AI link building actually works, and they are the spine of this score.
- Discover prospects. Build a list of sites that could plausibly link to you.
- Qualify by relevance. Cut the list down to sites worth the effort.
- Find verified contacts. Get a deliverable email for a real person.
- Write the pitch. Produce an email built around that specific page.
- Send and follow up. Deliver it, sequence the follow-ups, track replies.
- Earn the link. Someone on the other side decides you are worth citing.
Stage 6 is the one nobody sells honestly. It is a person making a judgment about your page, and no software makes that decision for them.
The half-points carry the real information, so here is exactly what earns one.
- Write, half point. The tool fills a template you wrote. Merge fields like first name and page URL are personalization in the mail-merge sense, not an email built from the page.
- Qualify, half point. The tool shows you metrics and lets you sort, but does not score topical relevance.
- Contacts, half point. The tool finds contacts, but as a paid add-on or in a way the docs do not confirm is automatic.
- Send, half point. The tool sends through your own inbox with tracking but does not run automated follow-up sequences.
1. AutoBacklinks
Our tool, so read the limitation carefully and weigh the rest accordingly.
AutoBacklinks is an AI agent that runs link-building prospecting and outreach end to end. You give it your site, it finds guest-post and link-insertion prospects through web scans and competitor backlink scans, filters them by SEO metrics, finds verified contacts, writes page-specific emails and follow-ups, sends them, and tracks replies in one dashboard.

AutoBacklinks Features
Best feature: AI relevance scoring per prospect. Topical fit, not just Domain Rating, so a strong-DR site with no connection to your topic does not make the campaign.
Core features:
- Prospect discovery from web scans and competitor backlink scans.
- SEO filtering on DR, organic traffic, referring domains, and backlinks.
- Verified contact lookup, run after qualification so you do not pay to enrich sites you were never going to email.
- Emails and follow-ups drafted from each prospect's own page, not a merge-field template.
- Sending with free mailbox warmup, plus hold-for-review or send-automatically modes.
- Recurring campaigns that re-run weekly, biweekly, or monthly.
- Reply tracking on a six-column opportunities board, plus backlink valuation before you spend.

| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Covers all five automatable stages in one workflow | Smaller public review footprint than decade-old rivals |
| Relevance scoring, not just authority metrics | Trial requires a card, unlike Linkee and Mentiohunt |
| Emails written from the prospect's page | Not a full SEO suite, so it does not replace Ahrefs |
| Campaigns can recur on a schedule without you | Credit model needs volume planning up front |
| SEO metrics bundled, no separate Ahrefs seat needed | You still approve prospects and emails, by design |
AutoBacklinks Pricing
| Plan | Price | Credits | Sites | Mailboxes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $79/mo | 2,500 | 2 | 2 |
| Growth | $179/mo | 7,500 | 5 | 5 |
| Scale | $399/mo | 20,000 | 25 | 15 |
Credits are spent per action, and the rates are published: 1 per prospect, 0.5 for SEO metrics on a site, 3 for a verified email, 1 for an AI-written email, 10 for a backlink valuation. A year costs eleven months. The trial is 7 days and 120 credits, and it requires a card.
How AutoBacklinks compares with the rest of this list
It ties with BacklinkGPT and Mentiohunt on coverage and separates on the things coverage does not capture. Against BacklinkGPT it is cheaper to start, $79 against $149. Against Mentiohunt it holds every prospect and email for your approval instead of sending by default. Against Pitchbox and BuzzStream it bundles the SEO data and the AI, where those two expect you to bring your own Ahrefs seat or API key.
The honest evidence I can point at is our own education-niche campaign: 187 emails sent, 155 opened, 32 replies, 6 bounces, a 17.1% reply rate. That came from prospecting quality, not clever copy.
2. BacklinkGPT
The most improved tool in this set, and now a genuine rival on coverage. It takes you from target keywords to live backlinks in one workflow, and it is the only tool here that adds LinkedIn as a second outreach channel.

BacklinkGPT Features
Best feature: relevance verdicts with reasons. Prospects come back marked "keep, drop, or a second look, with the reason written down," which is stronger qualification than a metrics column you sort by hand.
Core features:
- Prospecting that sweeps the SERPs and competitor backlink profiles.
- Contact discovery for the editor, founder, or writer with email and LinkedIn, ranked so you pitch the right person first.
- AI pitches described as "grounded in their page."
- An agent that pitches, follows up, and negotiates, on autopilot or with manual approval.
- Backlink monitoring after the link goes live.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Full five-stage coverage with real qualification | Highest entry price of the three tools scoring 5.0 |
| LinkedIn outreach alongside email | Credit allowances were cut in 2026 at unchanged prices |
| Reasons attached to keep or drop decisions | Trial requires a card |
| Monitors links after publication | Smaller review base than the veteran platforms |
BacklinkGPT Pricing
| Plan | Price | Prospect credits | Connected accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $149/mo | 2,000 | 1 |
| Growth | $399/mo | 6,000 | 3 |
| Scale | $999/mo | 20,000 | 6 |
Worth flagging: those credit allowances are lower than they were earlier in 2026, when Starter carried 4,000 prospect credits at the same $149. Price your volume against the current numbers, not an older review. The trial is 7 days with a card, and the site states nothing is charged during it.
How BacklinkGPT compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
The closest competitor on stage coverage, and the two work in a similar way: an agent runs the pipeline, you approve. BacklinkGPT's LinkedIn channel is something we do not offer, and it monitors links post-publication. AutoBacklinks starts at nearly half the price, publishes its per-action credit rates, and supports recurring campaigns. If your outreach naturally runs through LinkedIn as much as email, BacklinkGPT earns the premium.
3. Mentiohunt
Full five-stage coverage at the cheapest entry in the top tier, and the only tool here that adds new prospects to a live send queue without asking you first. Mentiohunt targets founder-led B2B SaaS teams, roughly 2 to 30 people, who do not want to operate outreach at all.

Mentiohunt Features
Best feature: it hands the thread back. The automation stops the moment a prospect replies, and the conversation forwards to your own mailbox, so a person answers the person.
Core features:
- Daily discovery from your article URLs, your keywords, and competitor backlink profiles.
- Fit scoring with a plain-language rationale on every opportunity, not just a DR number.
- A quality filter that drops PBNs, generic directories, and low-traffic farms before you see them.
- Contact details scraped live on each run rather than read out of a database synced months ago.
- AI drafts written per site, against the specific placement angle.
- Sending from Mentiohunt's own warmed pool, so bounces and spam complaints land on their infrastructure instead of your domain.
- Free inbox warmup, with target types covering guest posts, resource pages, product roundups, and editorial listicles.
The control model is the thing to weigh. Mentiohunt is explicit in its own FAQ that there is no approval gate:
There is no per-email approval step. Outreach is scheduled automatically when a good-fit opportunity is discovered.
You monitor a queue and cancel what does not fit. That inverts every other tool in this list, where nothing leaves until you click send. It also inverts the rule at the end of this article: automate the labor, keep the judgment. Cancelling is judgment on a deadline, and it only protects you if you actually open the queue.
One thing the documentation does not settle. The site says outreach never touches your domain, while the plan sheet lists "unlimited outreach inbox accounts" and the reply FAQ has you answering from your own connected mailbox. Which sending path applies when is worth asking before you buy.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Full five-stage coverage from $49/mo | No per-email approval, so you cancel rather than approve |
| Real opportunities visible before you enter a card | The Pro plan covers one website only |
| Sender reputation stays off your own domain | Pooled sending is shared reputation you do not control |
| Plain-language fit rationale on every prospect | Young product, and the public reviews are first names and handles |
| Live scraping, so DR, traffic, and contacts are current | The vendor guarantees no reply rate and no placement timeline |
Mentiohunt Pricing
| Plan | List price | Current price | Websites |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $79/mo | $49/mo | 1 |
| Agency | $149/mo | $99/mo | Up to 5 |
Pro covers 10 competitors tracked, roughly 25 daily opportunities, 20 manual prospect submissions a day, 200 backlinks monitored daily, and free inbox warmup. Agency raises that to 15 competitors and roughly 25 daily opportunities per website. Both figures on the pricing page are discounts against a higher list price, so check what renews rather than what you pay today.
You can see your own opportunities with no card. A card is required only to start outreach, which opens a 7 day trial at $0.
How Mentiohunt compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
They tie on coverage and split on who holds the send button. Mentiohunt sends by default and lets you cancel. AutoBacklinks holds every prospect and every email until you approve it, which is slower, and that is the point. Mentiohunt is cheaper to enter at $49 against our $79, and its no-card preview is an easier first look than our card-gated trial. We cover more than one site on the entry plan, publish per-action credit rates, and run campaigns that repeat on a schedule. If you want outreach that goes out whether or not you open the dashboard, that is exactly what Mentiohunt sells, and exactly what you should be sure you want.
4. Linkee AI
Strong prospecting and vetting, with the writing stage being where its marketing runs ahead of its product.

Linkee AI Features
Best feature: auto-vetting. Contextual relevance scoring plus filters for authority, spam score, word count, and language, with detection and removal of PBNs and broken or insecure sites.
Core features:
- A large prospect database with automatic categorization by site type and niche.
- Built-in verified email finder with names and job titles.
- Bundled Ahrefs-sourced metrics paid from your Linkee credits, so no separate Ahrefs seat.
- Templates with merge fields, plus automatic follow-ups that cost no credits.
- Import from Ahrefs or Semrush exports.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Heavy automatic vetting and PBN filtering | Emails are templates with merge fields, not per-page drafts |
| 14-day, 500-credit trial with no card | Campaigns do not recur, so every cycle restarts with you |
| Bundled SEO metrics, no extra subscription | No mailbox warmup anywhere in its documentation |
| Follow-ups do not consume credits | Per-action credit rates are not published |
Linkee AI Pricing
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly | Credits | Projects |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Essential | $97/mo | $80.83/mo | 10,000 | 1 |
| Pro | $197/mo | $164.17/mo | 25,000 | 1 |
| Agency | $358/mo | $298.33/mo | 60,000 | Unlimited |
The trial is 14 days and 500 credits with no card, which is more open than ours.
How Linkee AI compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
Both bundle SEO metrics and both cover discovery through sending, which puts them closer to each other than to Pitchbox or BuzzStream. The split is at the writing stage.
Linkee's live outreach page runs on templates personalized with merge fields while its homepage claims AI email creation, so the honest description is templates with AI assistance available. AutoBacklinks drafts from the prospect's page by default, includes warmup, and repeats campaigns on a schedule. The full head-to-head is in AutoBacklinks vs Linkee.
5. Pitchbox
The veteran. For over a decade this has been the agency-grade outreach platform, and it has folded AI into the parts of outreach that eat time.

Pitchbox Features
Best feature: the AI Template Assistant, tuned on what Pitchbox describes as tens of millions of outreach emails and their actual results. Nothing else here has that corpus behind it.
Core features:
- Prospecting with saved searches across many opportunity types.
- Contact discovery at scale with large contact ceilings.
- AI Personalization, AI Reply, and AI Keyword Assistant alongside the Template Assistant.
- Native integrations with Ahrefs, Semrush, Moz, and Majestic.
- Deep team workflow: roles, permissions, and multi-stage approvals.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The most battle-tested outreach platform here | AI personalization bills your own OpenAI or Anthropic key |
| Team workflow built for many concurrent campaigns | SEO data beyond default Moz DA needs your own accounts |
| Huge corpus behind its AI templates | Highest recurring cost of the software options |
| Strong integration coverage | Takes real training before a team is productive |
Pitchbox Pricing
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Email accounts | Emails/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pro | $300/mo | $210/mo | 2 | 2,000 |
| Advanced | $600/mo | $420/mo | 6 | 5,000 |
| Scale | $1,200/mo | $825/mo | 20 | 25,000 |
Enterprise is custom. Note that the subscription is not the whole stack: Pitchbox states the AI costs "are borne by the user," so budget your model spend on top.
How Pitchbox compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
Pitchbox is machinery for supervising a team of operators. AutoBacklinks is an agent that does the operating. Pitchbox scores half a point on qualification because it ships with Moz DA by default and needs your own Ahrefs, Semrush, or Majestic credentials for anything richer, where our SEO metrics are bundled at a published 0.5 credits per site.
If you already have the team, the seats, and the data subscriptions, Pitchbox's depth is real. If you are starting in 2026, you are buying a manual-era workflow. The full comparison is here, and the closest Pitchbox alternatives are covered separately.
6. BuzzStream
An outreach CRM first and an automation tool second, which is a design choice rather than a gap. It is the tool digital PR teams keep coming back to.

BuzzStream Features
Best feature: ListIQ, an AI media-list builder that scores journalist relevance and activity from news search, plus the relationship history that makes the second pitch land better than the first.
Core features:
- Prospect research with metrics and automatic contact discovery.
- Relationship and conversation history across the whole team.
- Email sequences with follow-ups and templates you write.
- Performance analytics on opens, replies, and placements.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Lowest entry price of the established platforms | Emails run from templates you write |
| Relationship history is genuinely valuable over time | Qualification is metrics and sorting, not relevance scoring |
| Built for teams doing digital PR | Per-user pricing climbs quickly on bigger teams |
| Long track record with named agency clients | Not designed for volume automation |
BuzzStream Pricing
| Plan | Price | Users | Contacts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $49/mo | 1 | 500 |
| Growth | $174/mo | 3 | 25,000 |
| Professional | $424/mo | 6 | 100,000 |
| Custom | From $999/mo | 15+ | 300,000+ |
Extra seats are $58 on Growth and $70 on Professional. Reviewers quoting $24 are citing an old price.
How BuzzStream compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
Different jobs. BuzzStream optimizes for remembering every past conversation with a journalist. AutoBacklinks optimizes for producing qualified prospects and page-specific emails without you touching each stage.
BuzzStream is cheaper at one seat and better if relationships are your advantage. We are stronger if your bottleneck is finding and qualifying prospects in the first place. The head-to-head is here, and the wider field is in BuzzStream alternatives.
7. Medialyst
Digital PR rather than blogger outreach, and the only tool here that loses points on purpose.

Medialyst Features
Best feature: live email verification. It verifies contacts when you ask for them rather than serving a stale quarterly database, and it does not charge you for unverified contacts.
Core features:
- AI agents that read current coverage to find journalists actively working your beat.
- A 0 to 100 relevance score per journalist with a personalized pitch angle citing their recent articles.
- Removal of journalists inactive for six months.
- Pitches sent through your own Gmail or Outlook, with open, click, and reply analytics.
- Unlimited seats on every plan.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Journalist scoring is the best qualification here | Will not mass-send, by design |
| Live verification, unverified contacts not charged | Wrong tool if you want volume automation |
| Unlimited seats, no per-seat fees or contracts | Priced above the general-purpose tools |
| First list free with no card | Digital PR only, not guest posts or link insertions |
Medialyst Pricing
| Plan | Monthly | Annual | Credits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $149/mo | $1,162/yr | 3,500 |
| Pro | $299/mo | $2,332/yr | 10,000 |
| Scale | $800/mo | $6,240/yr | 50,000 |
How Medialyst compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
Barely competing. Medialyst pitches journalists for editorial coverage and high-authority news links. AutoBacklinks pitches site owners for guest posts, link insertions, and resource-page placements.
Medialyst scores half on writing and half on sending because its own site says "No mass-blast automation" and pitches go out after you review them. That is a feature for digital PR and a limitation for link building at volume. Many teams should run both.
8. Semrush Link Building Tool
The finding no roundup I read mentioned: you can run the Semrush Link Building Tool on one project without paying, and it genuinely sends outreach.

Semrush Link Building Tool Features
Best feature: it is the only real outreach automation on this list with a free entry point that does not expire.
Core features:
- Prospect suggestions from your keywords and competitors, in a Prospects report.
- A three-stage workflow: Prospects, In Progress, Monitor.
- Mailbox connection for Gmail, Outlook, Office 365, or Exchange Online.
- Outreach sent from the In Progress tab, with follow-ups.
- Tracking for delivered, opened, replied, auto-replied, and not delivered.
- Placeholder templates, where a token like
[URL of prospect]fills per recipient.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Free on one project, with real sending | Personalization is merge fields, not per-page drafting |
| Sends, follows up, and tracks replies properly | Contact discovery not confirmed automatic in the docs |
| Sits inside the SEO suite many teams already own | You buy a whole suite to get an outreach tool |
| Mailbox options cover most business setups | Project limits push you up the plan ladder |
Semrush Link Building Tool Pricing
Free for one project. Paid plans raise the project ceiling, and Semrush's suite pricing starts at $117.33/mo billed annually on its entry SEO tier.
One caution: Semrush renamed its plans recently, and parts of its own help centre still describe the older Pro, Guru, and Business tiers with their project allowances. Check the current plan page for the project limit you are buying rather than trusting an older article.
I scored contacts at half rather than full because I could not confirm from Semrush's documentation that it supplies verified prospect email addresses automatically. Test that stage before you rely on it.
How the Semrush Link Building Tool compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
The free project is a genuinely good place to learn the workflow, and I would rather you start there than pay us prematurely. The ceiling arrives at the writing stage. Merge-field templates are the format the whole category is trying to escape, and Semrush has no relevance scoring, warmup, or recurring campaigns. When one project stops being enough, compare the suite cost against a dedicated tool.
9. LinkAssistant
Part of SEO PowerSuite, and the most underrated entry here. Desktop software rather than a web app, which is either a feature or a dealbreaker depending on how you work.

LinkAssistant Features
Best feature: breadth for the money. It advertises "10+ methods to find link building opportunities," finds email addresses and names, and does "Sending bulk automated email" with reply tracking, all in one desktop app.
Core features:
- Ten or more prospecting methods across different link types.
- Email and name lookup for prospects.
- Bulk automated sending with templates.
- Sent-email and reply tracking.
- Runs locally, so your data stays on your machine.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Genuine free version | Free version cannot save projects |
| Cheapest paid route to prospecting plus sending | No relevance scoring at all |
| Desktop app keeps data local | Personalization is ready-made templates |
| Part of a wider SEO suite | Desktop software feels dated next to web apps |
LinkAssistant Pricing
| Licence | Price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Free | €0 | One project, no saving, capped crawling |
| Professional | €349/yr (about €29/mo) | Unlimited projects and backlinks |
| Enterprise | €599/yr (about €50/mo) | Adds white-label reports |
| Max+ | €899/yr (about €75/mo) | Adds account manager and priority support |
The free version's real catch is that it cannot save your work, so treat it as an evaluation tool rather than a permanent free tier.
How LinkAssistant compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
LinkAssistant automates the labor and none of the judgment: it will find and mail hundreds of sites, and it will not tell you which ones are worth approaching. That is the gap our relevance scoring exists to fill. On price it is the cheapest path from nothing to real outreach, and for a solo SEO on a tight budget that matters more than any feature list.
10. Mailshake
A cold-email platform, not a link building tool. It belongs here because these roundups keep listing it, and because the distinction is the whole point of this article.

Mailshake Features
Best feature: deliverability and sending discipline at a low price. Its own headline is about landing in inboxes, and it is trusted by sales teams at over 100,000 companies.
Core features:
- Email sequences with automated follow-ups and A/B testing.
- SHAKESpeare, an AI writer for email copy.
- Data Finder for contact lookup, sold as a paid add-on.
- Ready-to-use mailboxes as a separate add-on.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Cheapest sending tool here at $29/mo | No link prospecting or qualification at all |
| Solid deliverability focus | Contacts cost an extra $19/mo |
| AI copy generation built in | AI writes from your brief, not a prospect's page |
| Mailbox add-on simplifies setup | Built for sales sequences, not editorial outreach |
Mailshake Pricing
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $29/mo | $25/mo |
| Email Outreach | $49/mo | $45/mo |
| Sales Engagement | $99/mo | $85/mo |
Add-ons: Data Finder $19/mo, ready-to-use mailboxes $12/mo.
How Mailshake compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
They are not alternatives. Mailshake is the send stage of a stack you assemble yourself, and it has no idea what a link prospect is. If you already have a qualified list and verified contacts, it will mail them cheaply. If producing that list is the actual work, Mailshake does not touch it.
11. Hunter
The most honest tool in this list about what it is not.

Hunter Features
Best feature: email finding and verification, which is the job it has done better than almost anyone for years, with sequences bolted on sensibly.
Core features:
- Email finding and verification by domain or person.
- Email Sequences with up to five automated follow-ups.
- Waiting periods you set between 1 and 999 days.
- Automatic stop when a recipient replies, unsubscribes, or hard bounces.
- Threading, so follow-ups land in the original conversation.
- Discover, a B2B company database with AI-assisted filters.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Sequences available on the free plan | No link prospecting or relevance scoring |
| Best-known contact data quality | No AI writing for outreach |
| Clean automatic stop conditions | Free plan capped at 50 credits per month |
| Unlimited team members even on free | Discover is a sales database, not a link database |
Hunter Pricing
| Plan | Monthly | Billed yearly |
|---|---|---|
| Free | €0 | 50 credits/mo, 1 email account, 500 recipients per sequence |
| Starter | €49/mo | €34/mo |
| Growth | €149/mo | €104/mo |
| Scale | €299/mo | €209/mo |
How Hunter compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
Hunter is the contact-and-send half of a stack and is very good at that half. AutoBacklinks covers the same two stages and adds the three Hunter does not: finding the prospects, deciding which are worth pitching, and writing the email from the page. If you are already committed to your own prospecting method, Hunter plus a free Semrush project is a legitimate cheap stack.
12. Respona: no longer a link building automation tool
Worth knowing if you are shopping from an older list, because most of them have not checked.

Respona used to sell self-serve outreach software. Its pricing page now sells placements, priced per link, with no self-serve software plans listed at all.
Placements include content, outreach, and publishing. You control anchors, URLs, and custom requirements.
Respona Pricing
| Tier | Price | Minimum DR | Traffic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $100/placement | DR 20+ | 100-5K |
| Standard | $160/placement | DR 30+ | 100-10K |
| Authority | $240/placement | DR 40+ | 500-20K |
| Power | $400/placement | DR 50+ | 1K-30K |
| Elite | $500/placement | DR 60+ | 1K-100K |
Volume discounts start around 10% at $3,000/mo of spend and scale up from there.
How Respona compares with AutoBacklinks.ai
This is not a software comparison any more. Respona sells you an outcome with the content, outreach, and margin bundled into every link price. AutoBacklinks is software you operate, where you keep the publisher relationships.
Buying placements is a legitimate choice, and I costed that trade-off honestly in buying backlinks and outsource link building. Just do not compare a per-link price against a monthly subscription as though they are the same purchase. The old self-serve Respona still exists inside the Semrush App Center, which I covered in AutoBacklinks vs Respona.
What most "link building automation tools" lists get wrong
Here is why this list is twelve tools and not the twenty-plus you will see elsewhere.
The pages ranking for these queries pad their lists with software that touches no stage of link acquisition at all. One "Top Automated Link Building Tools for SEO" list reads, in its own order: Ahrefs, Majestic SEO, Linkody, SEMrush, MozPro. Four of those five are backlink indexes or monitors. They report on links. They do not prospect for a campaign, find contacts, write, or send.
The pattern repeats.
- A "12 Best Automated Link Building Tools" list includes G2, a software review marketplace, plus two journalist-pitching platforms.
- A list titled "10 Link Building Automation Tools That Actually Work" leads with Linkody, whose homepage describes it as "24/7 link tracking so you can focus on building links." That is monitoring links you already have.
- A "23 Link Building Tools" roundup leads with Link Whisper, which builds internal links. Different link type entirely.
- A "12 Best Link Building Tools in 2026" page states that "Google Sheets is probably the best tool for link building data."
- One list still recommends Postaga at number seven. I checked postaga.com in August 2026: it returns HTTP 404 with the body "Site Not Configured," and app.postaga.com returns 404 too. There is no site behind the domain. It is the second tool in this category to go dark, after LinkHunter shut down when Google deprecated the
num=100parameter its discovery engine relied on.
To be clear about what I am not saying: Ahrefs, Majestic, and Moz are excellent tools shelved in the wrong aisle. Ahrefs' Link Intersect will hand you a better prospect list than most dedicated prospecting features, and Ahrefs' own content tells you to go get Pitchbox or BuzzStream when you want to send the emails. Buy them for data. Just do not buy them expecting automation.
What this link building automation score does not measure
A score this clean hides things, so here is what it misses.
It measures coverage, not quality. A tool earns a full point for writing your emails whether it writes good ones or bad ones. Three tools tie at 5.0 and they do not feel remotely the same to operate.
It says nothing about whether the loop repeats. Every stage can be automated and the campaign still stops dead when you stop clicking. Recurring campaigns are the difference between automating a task and automating a process, and most tools here do not have them.
It ignores deliverability. Mailbox warmup, sending pace, and bounce handling decide whether stage 5 works at all. A tool that automates sending into a cold mailbox has automated your way into a spam folder.
It ignores who holds the send button. Mentiohunt scores 5.0 by scheduling the sends itself. AutoBacklinks scores 5.0 by drafting and waiting for you. Identical scores, opposite operating models, and the difference is the whole experience of using them.
It ignores the link model. Respona scores nothing and sells you finished links. A product built on reciprocal mentions could score 5.0 while trading links rather than earning them. Coverage says nothing about whether the links are the kind you want.
Is automated link building safe, or is it a link scheme?
This is the question underneath the category, and Google answers it directly.
Google's spam policies define link spam as "the practice of creating links to or from a site primarily for the purpose of manipulating search rankings." The examples include this line verbatim:
Using automated programs or services to create links to your site
Read it carefully, because it draws the line that decides whether your automation is safe.
Google names automated link creation as spam. It does not name automated link asking as spam. Software that finds a relevant site, finds the editor, drafts a pitch, and sends it has not created a link. A person read it and decided. That is the outreach link builders have done by hand for twenty years, run faster.
Software that generates links directly, by posting them, embedding them in widgets, or trading them at scale, is doing the thing the policy names.
Two other lines from the same policy are worth pinning up.
- "Excessive link exchanges" is listed as link spam, which rules out any product whose engine is reciprocal mentions, and there are several selling into this category.
- "Buying or selling links for ranking purposes" is listed too. One "link building automation tools" roundup I read recommends a marketplace selling rental backlinks from $1 a month and guest posts from $5. Rented links are purchased links with a subscription attached.
How to choose a link building automation tool
You want to spend nothing first. Run the Semrush Link Building Tool on one project free and pair it with Hunter's free plan for contacts and sequences. That covers real prospecting and real sending at zero cost, which is the honest answer to "free link building automation tools" and the one those listicles never give.
You already pay for Ahrefs, Semrush, or Moz. You have data, not automation. Semrush users should switch the Link Building Tool on before buying anything else.
You have a team and a relationship-led program. BuzzStream, where the CRM is the point.
You are doing digital PR. Medialyst, and accept that it will not mass-send.
You have an agency and enterprise budget. Pitchbox, with the model API costs priced in from the start.
You want it off your desk entirely. Mentiohunt, if you are comfortable with emails going out unless you cancel them, and you only need one site covered.
You are one person and the pipeline is the problem. This is the case we built AutoBacklinks for. BacklinkGPT is the closest competitor on coverage at a higher entry price, and Linkee is worth testing alongside on its no-card trial.
Run the free trials on the same prospect list and compare the emails each one drafts, because that is where tools with identical scores actually diverge. Or start a trial and score us yourself. If you want the wider field of AI-first options, I reviewed them in best AI link building tools.
FAQ
What is the best link building automation tool?
Measured by stage coverage, AutoBacklinks, BacklinkGPT, and Mentiohunt tie at 5.0 out of 5, with Linkee and Pitchbox at 4.5. Coverage is not the whole answer. Mentiohunt reaches its score by scheduling outreach automatically with no per-email approval step, so check how much control a tool leaves you as well as what it can do.
Are there free link building automation tools?
Yes. The Semrush Link Building Tool runs free on one project and genuinely sends outreach and follow-ups. Hunter's free plan gives you 50 credits a month, one connected email account, and sequences with automated follow-ups. LinkAssistant has a free version, though it cannot save projects. Together, Semrush and Hunter cover prospecting, contacts, and sending at no cost, with template-based writing rather than per-page drafting.
How do you automate backlinks?
You automate the work of asking, not the link itself. Software can discover candidate sites, score them for relevance, find a verified contact, draft an email from the target page, and send it with follow-ups. The link is granted by a person who reads your pitch. Any tool promising to generate links directly is doing something Google's spam policies name as link spam.
Is automated link building safe for SEO?
Yes, when the automation stops before link creation. Google's spam policies list "Using automated programs or services to create links to your site" as link spam, so automating link generation is unsafe. Automating prospecting, contact finding, drafting, and sending is normal outreach run faster. Keep a human approving which sites you approach and which emails go out, and be careful with tools built on link exchanges or paid placements.
Can link building be fully automated?
No. Five of the six stages can be automated. The sixth, earning the link, is a decision another person makes about whether your page is worth citing, and no software makes it for them. Any tool claiming full automation is either counting only the first five stages, or selling you links rather than outreach.
Do Ahrefs and Semrush automate link building?
Semrush partly does. Its Link Building Tool connects a Gmail, Outlook, Office 365, or Exchange mailbox and sends outreach and follow-ups from the In Progress tab, with placeholder-based personalization, free on one project. Ahrefs does not. Ahrefs provides backlink data and prospecting research through Site Explorer, Content Gap, and Link Intersect, and its own content points you to a separate tool to send the emails.
Is Respona still a link building software tool?
No. Respona now sells managed placements priced per link, from $100 for a DR20+ site to $500 for DR60+, with content, outreach, and publishing included. There are no self-serve software plans on its pricing page. If you are comparing it against outreach software, you are comparing an agency service against a tool.
How much do link building automation tools cost?
The tools covering all five automatable stages start between $49 and $149 a month: Mentiohunt at $49 against a $79 list price, AutoBacklinks at $79, BacklinkGPT at $149. Linkee is $97 and Pitchbox is $300, or $210 billed annually. BuzzStream starts at $49 for one user. Free options exist at the Semrush Link Building Tool on one project, Hunter's free plan, and LinkAssistant's free version.
